Performance Report: No Torque and Drag with DRILL BEADS and DRILL BEAD Recovery Unit While Tripping

North Dakota

Challenge: An operator requested assistance in drilling operations of an 8,700-ft (2,652-m) lateral section and provision of continuous ROP with little torque and drag.

Solution: The operator chose to use ALPINE DRILL BEADS additive and the ALPINE DRILL BEAD Recovery Unit (BRU) midway through the lateral section.

Result: ALPINE DRILL BEAD product and BRU were utilized midway through the lateral section and provided the necessary friction reduction with standoff to drill successfully to TD, despite having to make a trip due to tool failures.

The Details

  • The operator started using the BRU at 14,925 ft (4,549 m)
  • 2 to 3-lb/gal DRILL BEADS additive were maintained in the system
  • Pumped 8 to 10-lb/gal DRILL BEAD additive sweeps during slides (open to the reserve pit)
  • TOTH due to tool failure at 18,065 ft (5,506 m) and had no drag issues while tripping
  • The well reached TD at 19,698 ft (6,004 m) in 25 days.
